The Greek poet named Ovid coined the famous term narcissism. In the story Narcissus falls in love with his own reflection. On the contrary Echo madly falls in love with Narcissus completely unaware of this fact. Towards the end of the story, Narcissus informs Echo, “I would die before I give you power over me.” Echo responds to this by saying “I give you power over me.” The story does not have a happy ending and at the end of both of them die for they realize that their love for each other is unattainable.

A. Harrison Barnes, the owner of LawCrossing.com says that most of a lot of young associates in the law firms are suffering from Narcissistic Entitlement Syndrome (“NES”). Associates suffering from this disorder cannot find a stable job for themselves. They keep switching from jobs frequently. He says that it is a very serious disorder commonly found affecting at least 10% of the young associates. People with NES think very high of themselves and looks down upon others. This disorder needs to be addressed on time for it can have serious implications on one’s career.

A. Harrison Barnes states that Narcissism can be of two types. Healthy narcissism is beneficial for everyone as they need to be aware of their basic rights and deserve to be treated well by all. Every individual must be proud of his or her achievements. There is a second kind of Narcissism that is unhealthy. People tend to become self obsessed and unknowingly or knowingly violate other people’s rights. Associates with NES tend to fantasize and day dream in excess. They are power hungry and engage themselves in the endless pursuit of success. They are ready to forego anything to reach the top. This often makes them commit mistakes that hurt their legal careers.

The people obsessed with NES are very arrogant because of their inflated sense of ego. These people believe that they occupy a high position in the society and should mingle with only the people who are at their level professionally or otherwise. People with NES expect constant admiration and recognition from the people around them.

The people with NES cannot accept defeat says A. Harrison Barnes. These people nurture intense internal rage when ever criticized, as their egos are very easily hurt. Eventually they tend to isolate themselves from their other associates and look for new opportunity. They also tend to get into verbal arguments with associates or people who give them advice. They are also generally unsympathetic towards feelings or requirements of others.

Effects associated with NES:

A. Harrison Barnes has noted that NES syndrome is very common among the associates with the highest performance levels. These associates are extremely proficient in their work and hence they are more susceptible to NES. He even estimated that over ten percent of the attorneys in their first year of working in the law firms develop NES. This acts as a great impediment in the progress of their carriers.

Attorneys who have received their education from the elite educational institutions also tend to suffer from NES syndrome. Such scholastic environments provide the students with the luxury to choose their desired course work and expect feedback concerning their performance. People with NIS get to study in such high academic environment where he or she can achieve great heights. Such high end goals also fit with the fantasies of the associates with NES.

A. Harrison Barnes says it is easy to identify a person with NES. These people generally believe that they should be given the type of work that they enjoy. They expect an upper hand in every situation and are very calculative in nature. They are extremely manipulative and think that they are always right.

Some of the common traits among the attorneys who have NES:

Given below are some of the common traits displayed by attorneys who suffer from NES.

  • A. Harrison Barnes also adds that people afflicted with NES in most of the cases did not have any “real job” before working in the law firm as a first year associate
  • They come from protective upper middle class families with their parents having a high academic background
  • In most of the cases the associates have completed their education from elite educational institutions
  • These people tend to look down upon the associates they work with
  • They demand people to recognize them as demigods. They expect every individual around him to recognize his omnipotence, intellectuality, and supreme knowledge
  • There are impulsive narcissists who often resort to physical abuse. Again they are verbally abusive narcissists who use emotional abuse for taunting others says A. Harrison Barnes

A. Harrison Barnes says that the personality type of the associates suffering from NES is not well suited for law practice. As a lawyer it is expected that he gives priority to the needs of his clients above everything.

A. Harrison Barnes in conclusion says that it is very important that these people strike a proper balance between their inner self and the outer one. Do not judge people and do not let your ego shadow your decisions and do not let it cloud your vision. Seek help if you display any such symptoms. It is very necessary to ensure that your legal career grows in a positive direction.
